Anthony Volpe appeared to pull the Yankees even with one swing in the sixth inning Wednesday night in the Bronx, but replay turned the moment into a fan-interference ruling instead of a game-tying homer.
The result
With George Lombard Jr. aboard at first, Volpe drove a ball toward the left-field seats. The initial call was a home run, a play that briefly carried echoes of the old Jeffrey Maier moment at Yankee Stadium.
After a review, however, the umpires determined that spectators had touched the ball while it was still over the field of play. The homer was erased.
Lombard was awarded the run, bringing the Yankees within 4-3, while Volpe was placed at second base. The rally did not continue: Spencer Jones struck out to close the sixth inning.
