Six seconds into the Bavarian derby, Manuel Neuer and Bayern Munich had already been caught in a moment of disbelief.
Augsburg took the lead almost straight from Saturday’s kick-off after an extraordinary error by the Bayern goalkeeper. Luis Diaz played the ball back to Neuer, but the 2014 World Cup winner saw his attempted clearance blocked by Augsburg midfielder Robin Felhauer, who had rushed forward to press him.
Felhauer collected possession around 20 metres from goal and ran unchallenged towards the empty target before finishing the move. Augsburg were ahead after only six seconds.
A Bundesliga record falls
The goal is the fastest in Bundesliga history, setting a new mark in the competition’s 63-year existence. What began as a routine restart turned instantly into one of the most startling openings the German top flight has seen.
For Neuer, usually so assured with the ball at his feet, there was no recovery possible. Felhauer’s pressure turned Bayern’s first touch of the derby into Augsburg’s dream start.
