Terem Moffi had waited seven months for a goal. On Saturday in Sinsheim, seven minutes after stepping off Hamburg’s bench, the former Nice forward met a cross with force and helped turn an afternoon around.
The move
Moffi, who left Nice in the summer following a difficult final campaign on the Côte d’Azur, has begun again at Hamburg. His start in northern Germany had been quiet, but his first goal for the club arrived at a decisive moment in a 3-2 win away to Hoffenheim.
Hamburg were level at 2-2 when the Nigerian striker was introduced. In the 83rd minute, he headed in to equalise, ending a personal scoring drought that had stretched back seven months.
The goal changed the momentum. Moffi’s intervention sparked the visitors’ late push, which was completed in the fourth minute of added time when Miro Muheim struck a spectacular volley from 25 metres.
The result lifted Hamburg to 11th place, comfortably clear of the bottom places. Hoffenheim, beaten after surrendering their advantage, dropped to 17th.
The French season around it
Elsewhere in a busy Bundesliga Saturday, Bayern Munich were held 2-2 by Augsburg in the Bavarian derby, their second draw of the league season.
The match began with an extraordinary error from Manuel Neuer. Six seconds after kick-off, Bayern’s goalkeeper was closed down by Robin Fellhauer following a back pass, allowing the Augsburg winger to score the fastest goal in Bundesliga history.
Bayern eventually replied through Ismael Saibari in the 55th minute, but Rodrigo Ribeiro restored Augsburg’s lead 10 minutes later after Neuer had pushed the ball away. Nathaniel Brown made it 2-2 in the 81st minute.
The visitors laid siege to the Augsburg goal but could not find a winner. Four Bayern goals were ruled out for offside, in the 51st, 53rd, 73rd and 75th minutes, while Serge Gnabry also missed a major chance in the 84th minute. Michael Olise had a subdued game.
Despite the draw, Bayern remain second behind Borussia Dortmund, who had themselves drawn 2-2 with Werder Bremen on Friday.
- Terem Moffi: first Hamburg goal, scored against Hoffenheim.
- Moussa Diaby: scored on his Bayer Leverkusen return against Mainz.
- Anthony Caci: netted twice for Mainz in the same match.
- Michael Olise: quiet in Bayern Munich’s draw at Augsburg.
French involvement was also decisive in Leverkusen’s 4-3 victory at Mainz. The home side had fallen 2-0 behind inside nine minutes before Anthony Caci struck twice, scoring in the 33rd and 42nd minutes to bring Mainz back level.
Leverkusen, Germany’s 2024 champions, regained control after Jarrell Quansah scored in the 55th minute. Moussa Diaby then produced the key finish 10 minutes later, curling a left-footed effort into the net.
It was Diaby’s first Bundesliga goal for three and a half years. The France international, capped 11 times, had left Leverkusen for Aston Villa in 2023 before moving to Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia a year later. He returned to Bayer Leverkusen in August, and his goal offered an immediate reminder of what had been missing.
