Roma Lose Mile Svilar for a Month After Training Stress Fracture

Roma must now prepare for a spell without Mile Svilar, with the goalkeeper facing at least a month on the sidelines after suffering a stress fracture in training. It is an unwelcome interruption for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, which will turn to Pierluigi Gollini while Svilar begins his recovery.

A training-ground setback for Roma

Svilar was injured during a session when he went down to his left and immediately felt pain in his foot. Footage of the incident shows the goalkeeper reaching for the affected area straight away after completing the dive.

The Roma goalkeeper addressed the setback on Instagram, admitting that the timing could scarcely have been worse. Yet his message was directed towards the work ahead, with Svilar saying he was already focused on rehabilitation and determined to return stronger. He also reaffirmed his support for the club, ending his post with a call for continued faith in the process.

Gasperini outlines the diagnosis

Gasperini confirmed that Roma have lost an important player for several weeks. He explained that the injury came after a push in training that was not particularly forceful, but nevertheless caused a stress fracture in the lower area of Svilar’s fifth toe.

  • The fracture is not displaced.
  • The expected healing period is at least one month.
  • Medical staff are considering whether surgery involving a screw may be required.
  • If that procedure is chosen, Svilar’s return could be pushed beyond the international break.

The coach described the absence as a serious blow, particularly given the importance of continuity in the goalkeeper’s role across a long Serie A campaign. Roma will now manage the period carefully rather than rush their first-choice goalkeeper back before the injury has properly settled.

Gollini given his opportunity

With Svilar unavailable, Gasperini said Roma will prepare Gollini for the forthcoming fixtures. The coach believes the deputy has an opportunity to re-establish himself as a significant goalkeeper, recalling that he has previously shown that level during earlier stages of his career.

For Roma, the next weeks will test both the depth of the squad and the patience required by a season that can turn on incidents far from Sunday afternoon. Svilar has made clear where his attention lies: recovery first, then a return to the group when the medical timetable allows.
