O’Hearn turns a bunt into a highlight
The Royals put down a sacrifice bunt in the fifth, and the play required quick work around the first-base bag. O’Hearn had his body facing away from the base as Eisert charged down the line to cover it, leaving the first baseman with an awkward delivery.
Rather than try to spin and make a conventional throw, O’Hearn slipped the ball through his legs to Eisert, who completed the out at first. The sacrifice accomplished its immediate purpose as a run crossed the plate, but the final out belonged to O’Hearn’s improvisation.
It was a first-base play with a little basketball flair: eyes on the approaching pitcher, ball delivered between the legs, and an out recorded before the Royals could extend the inning further.
