Elena Rybakina’s Ningbo title defence remains alive after the world No. 1 battled past qualifier Katarzyna Kawa, setting a Saturday semifinal with Diana Shnaider in the bottom half of the WTA 500 draw.
The other semifinal brings together Leylah Fernandez and Marie Bouzkova. Fernandez has survived three consecutive three-set matches this week, while Bouzkova has yet to drop a set on her route to the final four.
Quick facts
- Top seed and defending champion Rybakina faces 13th-ranked Shnaider.
- Fernandez meets Bouzkova in the first semifinal on Saturday.
- Rybakina leads Shnaider 2-0 in their 2026 meetings.
- Fernandez has won 10 of her past 12 matches since the US Open.
- Bouzkova is appearing in her third semifinal of 2026.
Rybakina came through 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 against Kawa in her first completed match of the tournament. She had received an opening-round bye, then moved on when Polina Kudermetova retired with Rybakina leading 5-0 in the first set.
The defending champion struck eight aces against Kawa and collected 81 percent of points behind her first delivery. On return, she generated 17 break opportunities and converted six.
Shnaider earned her place opposite Rybakina with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Iva Jovic. After losing the second set, Shnaider took charge of the decider, winning 79 percent of first-serve points and not allowing a break point.
The 13th-ranked Shnaider had already defeated Yulia Putintseva and Alexandra Eala in Ningbo. She owns a 10-3 record at the tournament after reaching the final on her 2023 debut and the semifinals last year.
It will be Shnaider’s fourth semifinal of the season, following runs to the last four in Adelaide, at Roland Garros and in Washington, D.C. She is seeking her first WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz trophy of 2026.
Rybakina holds the edge in Shnaider series
The pair have played twice this season, with Rybakina taking both encounters in straight sets. She won 6-3, 6-4 on Stuttgart clay, racing through 17 of the opening 22 points before sealing the match in 1 hour, 12 minutes.
Rybakina again prevailed 6-4, 6-4 when they met on Cincinnati hard courts in August. Shnaider now gets another chance against the top seed on a Ningbo court where she has repeatedly found deep-run form.
Fernandez reached the first semifinal with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 turnaround against Ekaterina Alexandrova. It was her second victory over Alexandrova in as many weeks, with the Canadian taking four of nine break chances.
The world No. 30 has spent just under eight hours on court while winning three straight deciding-set contests. Her opening win over seventh seed Elise Mertens required a recovery from 5-3 down in the final set, before she also outlasted Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
Fernandez began her Asian swing by lifting her first title of the year in Singapore. Six of her past seven matches have gone the distance, underlining the workload she carries into Saturday’s semifinal.
Bouzkova arrives without dropping a set
Bouzkova has taken a more direct route through the draw, defeating Kamilla Rakhimova, Anastasia Zakharova and fellow Czech Sara Bejlek in straight sets. She had been scheduled to face Iga Swiatek in round two, but Swiatek withdrew before that match.
The victory over Bejlek sent Bouzkova into her third semifinal of 2026 and her first at WTA 500 level or above since last August. Her previous two semifinal appearances this year both ended with titles.
Fernandez and Bouzkova have met only once, in Toronto in 2019, when Bouzkova swept through 6-0, 6-1. Their Ningbo meeting arrives with Fernandez riding a demanding run of deciders and Bouzkova carrying the fresher, straight-set record into the weekend.
