Santiago Castro’s First Roma Goal Seals Win Over Genoa

Roma found a decisive moment of individual quality at the Olimpico as Santiago Castro marked his first goal for the club in memorable fashion against Daniele De Rossi’s Genoa.

The Giallorossi had arrived at the match with a number of important absences, yet Castro gave the evening its defining image shortly after the restart. The 22-year-old Argentine, signed from Bologna in the summer, opened the scoring with a finish that put Roma on their way towards victory.

From a corner, Castro brought the ball under control while turning in a crowded penalty area. With Genoa defenders around him, he rolled the ball beneath his foot before lifting it over goalkeeper Justin Bijlow with the outside of his right boot. It was an improvised, delicate strike amid the congestion, and one that immediately brought an exuberant celebration from the forward.

For Castro, the goal carried particular weight. Having first made his name in Argentina with Vélez Sarsfield before moving to Italian football, he had been waiting for his first contribution in Roma colours. At the Olimpico, in a match shaped by a depleted squad and the tension of the league calendar, he supplied a finish of rare imagination.
