Scarlett Camberos Finishes 21st in Historic Ballon d’Or Nomination

London’s Ballon d’Or ceremony marked a new point of visibility for Mexican women’s football on Monday, 26 October, as Club América and captain Scarlett Camberos became the first Mexican club and player to receive nominations in the awards presented by France Football.

Camberos, who attended the event, was placed 21st in the final ranking after the positions outside the top 10 were released before the gala. She narrowly missed a place among the leading 20, but the result was a notable one in her first appearance on the shortlist.

The América forward finished above several established international names, including Caroline Weir in 25th, Alex Greenwood in 26th, Rose Lavelle in 27th and Vivianne Miedema in 28th. It was Weir’s second nomination, Lavelle’s second and Miedema’s fourth.

An historic year in Coapa

América’s recognition followed a landmark 2026 campaign under coach Ángel Villacampa. The Mexico City side reclaimed the Liga MX Femenil title by beating Monterrey’s Rayadas 3-1 on aggregate.

The two clubs met again in the Campeón de Campeones, where América won 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time.

The defining international result came against Washington Spirit. América prevailed 5-3 to lift its first Copa de Campeonas, the first such title won by a club. Camberos contributed six goals across the two competitions, helping carry the Eagles through a season that took the club from domestic recovery to continental recognition.
