OL Lyonnes left the pitch with frustration rather than damage on Wednesday night, held to a 0-0 draw by Chelsea in the Champions League. The Rhodaniennes could not find the decisive touch, but captain Selma Bacha insisted that one demanding evening should not cloud what has been a strong start to the campaign.
Lyon knew the challenge posed by an English side built on physicality and aggression. Chelsea enjoyed their own periods on top, while OL Lyonnes also created chances without converting them. Bacha admitted the result hurt, particularly because the team wanted to extend its winning momentum, but she urged the squad to keep perspective.
“We started the season strongly and we must not throw everything away because of this draw,” Bacha said. “We will continue moving forward. Of course I am disappointed because winning mattered to us, but we have to stay positive and analyse what was missing.”
For the Lyon captain, the main issue was patience, especially before the break. She felt her side spent too much of the first half chasing the ball, then giving it away too quickly after regaining possession. That pattern demanded repeated defensive efforts and drained energy in the press.
“We lacked patience,” Bacha explained. “In the first half, it felt as though we were constantly running after the ball. When we won it back, we lost it quickly, so it required a lot of effort. We also used a great deal of energy pressing. It was better in the second half, but we should have started much more strongly.”
A clean sheet and missed openings
Head coach Jonatan Giraldez took a measured view of a match in which clear openings were limited but both teams had moments to take control. He was encouraged that OL Lyonnes continued to pursue victory until the final stages, while the clean sheet against Chelsea stood out as an important positive.
“The team tried to reach the end of the match with the intention of winning, and that is positive,” Giraldez said. “We had an opportunity to win it, but Chelsea did as well. There were not many chances. Against a team like this, not conceding is good news.”
Giraldez felt there was quality on both sides, but neither team did enough in the key moments to turn promising situations into a breakthrough. For OL Lyonnes, the analysis now begins with a simple task: retain the positives from a disciplined defensive display, while finding the composure and sharper possession play that could have made the night theirs.
