Singapore GP: Verstappen on Pole as Antonelli Defends Title Lead

Singapore’s night race arrives with the title picture tightening around Kimi Antonelli, while Max Verstappen starts from pole position on a circuit that has remained an exception in his record. At Marina Bay, the Italian championship leader will line up fourth, behind Verstappen and the two Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, with George Russell pushed to the back after a heavy grid penalty.

A front row battle with Ferrari in contention

Verstappen has controlled the weekend so far, taking pole for the Sprint, winning the Sprint and then securing first place on the grid for the Grand Prix. Yet Singapore is one of the rare venues at which he has never won, leaving Ferrari with reason to believe it can turn strong Sprint pace into a serious challenge for victory.

  • Verstappen starts from pole position, still seeking his first Singapore Grand Prix win.
  • Leclerc begins second and Hamilton third for Ferrari.
  • Ferrari’s performance in the Sprint suggested it has the race speed to contest the lead.
  • A win would be Ferrari’s third of the season.
  • Leclerc produced a sharp practice start before the race and appeared ready to attack Verstappen immediately.

Leclerc made clear that Ferrari’s two drivers intend to work together if the opening phase presents an opportunity. “Lewis and I are starting close together,” he said during the drivers’ parade. “It will be important to operate as a team and try to bring home the victory. We will see where we are after the start and, if there is something to do, we will use every card available to win.”

Antonelli’s title opportunity as Russell starts last

Antonelli has an important afternoon ahead even without starting on the front two rows. He leads the drivers’ championship by 89 points over Mercedes team-mate Russell and could leave Singapore in position to claim his first mathematical title opportunity at Austin.

If Antonelli increases that advantage beyond 100 points after this race, the Austin round would become his first championship match point. The Italian will therefore need to balance the chance to join the fight involving Verstappen and Ferrari with the bigger value of a controlled points finish.

  • Antonelli starts fourth and leads the world championship.
  • His pre-race advantage over Russell stands at 89 points.
  • Russell will start last on the grid after a 60-place penalty.
  • The penalty followed several mechanical and electrical component changes on Russell’s car.
  • Mercedes is also moving closer to the constructors’ championship.

Russell’s predicament changes the internal Mercedes calculation. Antonelli has a clear chance to strengthen his own position, while the team’s constructors’ campaign remains on course for a decisive step forward.

Heat, humidity and a likely one-stop contest

The Marina Bay Street Circuit offers little margin for error, and the conditions are expected to add another layer to the race. Rain affected the previous day, but the forecast for Sunday points instead to high temperatures and humidity close to 80 per cent.

Tyre planning is expected to lean towards a single pit stop, unless a safety car or another interruption changes the shape of the evening. Teams can choose among the three available compounds, with track temperature and the physical demands of the street circuit likely to influence the timing of that decision.

The starting procedure began with drivers leaving the pit lane for practice starts and installation laps before taking their grid places. Hamilton and Leclerc had earlier greeted the packed Singapore crowd during a lap of the circuit in Ferrari Spider road cars.

Starting arrangements at Marina Bay

The Grand Prix is scheduled to begin at 14:00 Italian time. Hadjar, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll will not take their places on the grid, instead commencing the race from the pit lane.

  1. Max Verstappen — pole position
  2. Charles Leclerc — second
  3. Lewis Hamilton — third
  4. Kimi Antonelli — fourth
  5. George Russell — last on the grid after his penalty
  6. Isack Hadjar, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll — pit-lane starts

For Verstappen, it is a chance to complete a weekend he has led from the outset at a circuit still missing from his collection. For Ferrari, it is an opportunity to turn promising pace into a result of consequence. And for Antonelli, Singapore represents another stage in a championship season that is increasingly moving towards his hands.
