Spain Women Face USA in Washington to Launch World Cup Preparations

Spain begin a new international season in Washington D.C. on Saturday 10 October, with world champions Spain facing Olympic champions United States in the first of two friendlies on American soil.

The double-header is the opening step in Spain’s build-up towards the 2027 World Cup in Brazil next summer. Sonia Bermúdez’s side arrive as reigning world champions, while the United States bring the weight of four World Cup titles and their current Olympic crown.

A major test in Washington

The first meeting will be played at Audi Field, the 20,000-capacity stadium opened in 2018 in the US capital. Kick-off is scheduled for 14:30 local time, or 20:30 in mainland Spain.

Alexia Putellas is set to lead Spain into a fixture that brings together two of the defining forces in the women’s international game. For the Spanish side, the trip offers an early measure of their standing at the start of a season shaped by the long road to Brazil.

Spain seek another statement against the USA

The teams have met four times, with the United States winning three of those encounters. Spain’s sole victory came on 11 October 2022 in Pamplona, when goals from Laia Codina and Esther González secured a 2-0 result.

That win remains a significant marker in Spain’s rise, but Saturday presents another demanding occasion away from home against a side with deep tournament pedigree. The second friendly will complete a testing American window for Bermúdez and her players.

Teledeporte and RTVE Play will show the match live in Spain.
