Juventus have reached a point in their season where Luciano Spalletti is asking the players to carry a greater share of the burden. After absorbing criticism for missed targets, defending the demands of the shirt and, at times, challenging individuals such as Jonathan David and Kolo Muani, the coach’s message has become more direct.
A different message after Rennes
The change in tone followed Juventus’ league collapse against Lazio and the dressing-room discussion that came afterwards. That meeting at Continassa, held on Monday, brought a request from the squad for a more cautious formation. Juventus then showed a different setup and attitude against Rennes, but Spalletti’s assessment made clear that a tactical adjustment alone cannot resolve the wider problem.
From the bench, he had repeatedly urged his defenders to push higher. Instead, the team tended to retreat, abandoning the aggressive press that had been one of their strongest features during the period from December to February.
- Spalletti believes the reluctance to advance is an issue with deeper roots.
- He sees a side uncomfortable with taking territory when the ball is played backwards.
- The coach has identified a tendency to minimise risk once matches become difficult.
- Juventus had already drifted away from their counter-pressing principles after last season’s difficult February.
“It is a small underlying problem that has been there for a long time,” Spalletti said. “We do not feel comfortable gaining ground and closing down those metres every time the ball goes back.”
The formation cannot remove individual duty
Former Juventus midfielder Giancarlo Marocchi noted that the revised system appeared to give the team more protection, while many players were still performing below their level. Spalletti did not avoid his own responsibility, but he also placed the emphasis on the decisions made on the pitch.
“I am not stepping away from it,” he said, before pointing to the moments that shaped the match. In his view, the first goal could have been prevented. For the second, Juventus had possession and could have recycled the ball, yet chose a route that led to a corner despite being ahead of the situation.
Spalletti’s demand for sharper judgement
For the Juventus coach, the difference between a good player and a champion is often found before the decisive action: in the ability to read danger, select the right option and anticipate what comes next.
- Technique remains important in Spalletti’s assessment.
- But he also stressed the value of awareness and mentality.
- He wants players to recognise the key moments rather than relying on the structure around them.
- The message is that Juventus cannot expect a change of shape to compensate for poor individual choices.
“Those are the details that separate a strong player from a champion,” Spalletti said. “A champion sees things in advance. Technique matters, but so do the eyes and the mind.”
With pressure mounting around the Juventus bench, Spalletti is no longer prepared to act solely as the club’s shield. The Rennes performance offered a response in approach, but the next stage of Juventus’ season depends on whether the group can turn that response into responsibility when the match begins to turn against them.
