Strasbourg’s Winless Run Reaches Three After 2-1 Defeat at Nice

Strasbourg left Nice with another warning ringing through a side still searching for its collective rhythm. Racing had taken the lead shortly before the interval, but the 2-1 defeat extended their winless Ligue 1 sequence to three matches and exposed a lack of response once the contest turned against them.

Dario Essugo provided the Alsatians’ only moment of real incision, scoring in the 41st minute through an individual effort. It was Strasbourg’s final clear opening of the afternoon. Nice recovered to take the points, while Racing struggled to create danger and rarely connected effectively with centre-forward Conrad Harder.

Harder was often isolated, with responsibility shared between the striker and a team unable to supply him often enough. Gessime Yassine increasingly dropped deep in search of possession, another sign of Strasbourg’s difficulty in establishing control or attacking fluency.

A rebuilt side still lacking connections

The scale of the squad’s changes has been stark. Because of transfers and the absences of Doukouré and Nanasi, only two players in Sunday’s Strasbourg starting XI had worn the club shirt last season. That turnover may help explain a team short of established combinations and, at times, ideas.

Head coach Hugo Oliveira focused on his players’ inability to cope with adverse moments. “This group has to improve when things become difficult, whether we concede a goal or receive a red card,” the Portuguese coach said. “When events go against us, we struggle.”

Strasbourg’s current run stands at one draw and two defeats, their first three-match Ligue 1 spell without a victory since February. The next fixtures offer little room for a gentle recovery: Paris Saint-Germain come first, followed by Rennes.

Oliveira insisted his squad remains in a development process, but Racing will need a sharper response quickly. The season’s new pieces must begin to move together before the pressure rises further.
