Stuttgart’s perfect start to the Champions League will face a searching test on Tuesday, 20 October, when Atlético Madrid arrive at the Arena Stuttgart for a Matchday 3 meeting that carries early weight for both clubs.
Kick-off is scheduled for 21:00, with Stuttgart seeking to extend a European run that has brought six points from their opening two matches. The German side have won both games so far and can strengthen their position near the top of the standings with another result at home.
For Atlético, the night is an opportunity to regain ground. The Spanish side are looking for only their second victory of the league phase and know that a win in Germany would lift their standing as they pursue another place among Europe’s top eight, having finished in that group last season.
A measure of Stuttgart’s European start
Stuttgart have made an emphatic opening to their campaign, but Atlético represent a more demanding examination of how far the team can go in the competition. A third consecutive win would not only preserve their 100 per cent record but also underline their credentials against opponents accustomed to the latter stages of the Champions League.
Atlético travel with the pressure of needing points rather than simply managing their position. Their aim is to turn the trip to Germany into the result that restores momentum and keeps them moving towards the leading places in the table.
