Marseille’s night against Paris Saint-Germain grew darker at the Vélodrome as captain Timothy Weah was sent off with 13 minutes remaining, leaving OM a man down while trailing 2-1 in Sunday’s Ligue 1 meeting.
The dismissal came in the 77th minute, at a stage when Marseille were already chasing the game in the fifth round of the French season. Weah, formerly of PSG, had been booked shortly after the half-hour mark for a forceful challenge on Nuno Mendes.
His second caution followed when he held back the Paris left-back, with referee François Letexier producing the red card. Letexier had earlier shown a red card in error during the first half, but Weah’s eventual dismissal was justified after the two separate offences.
Marseille had also lost Igor Paixão to injury around the 30-minute mark. Reduced to 10 players and behind on the scoreline, the home side faced a steep final stretch in the Vélodrome’s biggest fixture.
