Tobias Harris Questionable for Spurs’ Opener After Calf Strain

The Spurs will enter preseason without Tobias Harris, with the veteran forward sidelined by a strained left calf suffered during training camp. San Antonio has listed Harris as questionable for the Oct. 20 regular-season opener against Oklahoma City.

Harris out through the preseason slate

Harris did not take part in Sunday’s Silver & Black intrasquad scrimmage, the club’s annual preseason tune-up. The 6-foot-8 power forward will sit out all five exhibition games and will be checked again once that schedule is complete.

The timing puts his availability for opening night in doubt. San Antonio begins its season at home against the Thunder on Oct. 20, a return meeting after the teams faced off in last season’s Western Conference Finals.

A new frontcourt piece on hold

San Antonio signed Harris in free agency on July 6, bringing in a steady veteran option after his two-season run with Detroit. He averaged 13.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 27.7 minutes per game last season as the Pistons finished first in the Eastern Conference.

For now, the Spurs will have to work through camp and preseason without him. The next evaluation after the exhibition schedule will determine whether Harris can be ready for the Oklahoma City opener.
