At St George’s Park, England’s first gathering after the World Cup has reopened an awkward question around Cole Palmer. The Chelsea midfielder was restored to Thomas Tuchel’s plans for the Nations League window, only to withdraw before reporting with a minor muscle problem — and the England coach has made clear that lost training time could carry consequences.
A difficult return after the World Cup
England face Spain on Saturday in their first match since the World Cup, where they reached the semi-finals before Argentina overturned the contest and ended their campaign. The run to the last four softened much of the reaction to Tuchel’s tournament selection, despite notable omissions including Palmer and Phil Foden.
Palmer had been included in the first squad named after the finals, offering the Chelsea player a route back into the international group. Instead, his physical issue forced him out days before the planned meeting of the squad.
- Cole Palmer was selected for the Nations League matches but withdrew before joining England.
- Morgan Gibbs-White was called up as Palmer’s replacement.
- Tino Livramento, Kobbie Mainoo, Declan Rice and Marcus Rashford were also removed from the squad.
- England’s opening post-World Cup assignment is against Spain on Saturday.
Tuchel stresses the value of training time
Tuchel suggested Palmer’s absence leaves him at a disadvantage in the competition for places. The coach said repeated injury-related absences mean he can only properly assess players when they are available to work directly with the national team.
“He misses a lot of training because of injuries,” Tuchel said. “I want to rely on what I can see and experience with my squad, and that requires players to be present in training. If you are not in the group, there is another level you need to reach to make an impression, and you cannot do that unless you are actually on the pitch with me. So, yes, it is a missed opportunity.”
The comments add another complication to Palmer’s England situation after he was left out of the World Cup squad. While Tuchel has brought him back into consideration, the Chelsea midfielder must now recover before he can build the training record his manager says is essential.
Chelsea recovery programme
Palmer is following an individual programme intended to resolve the minor muscular complaint. A Chelsea fitness coach is overseeing the work as he aims to regain full condition.
For England, the Nations League window begins with a heavyweight meeting against Spain. For Palmer, it is another international occasion watched from outside the camp, at a time when Tuchel has underlined that presence on the training pitch may determine who travels with the side in future.
