Unai Simón Eyes Yashin Trophy Glory at Ballon d’Or Gala

In London, with the Ballon d’Or gala due to begin at 9pm, Athletic Club goalkeeper Unai Simón arrives as the leading candidate for the Yashin Trophy, a recognition that would place another landmark in a career built in Bilbao and Spain’s national-team ranks.

Simón said the nomination carried particular meaning for a player who had not imagined reaching such a stage as a child. “It is a source of pride to be here,” he said. “You move through the different stages of your career and suddenly find yourself in this position. Like winning a World Cup, it is something I will appreciate even more over time, but I am very proud to be nominated now.”

The Athletic keeper is joined among the candidates by David Raya and Joan García, the other Spanish goalkeepers in contention ahead of the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Simón welcomed the trio’s presence on the list, saying Spain’s coach Luis would be pleased to see three members of his goalkeeping pool recognised.

Three different strengths in Spain’s goalkeeping group

Simón offered an assessment of his fellow nominees, identifying Raya’s quality in possession as a major asset. The Arsenal goalkeeper’s ability with the ball at his feet, he said, helps his side retain control.

Of Joan García, Simón reserved high praise for his work on the line, saying the younger goalkeeper was already operating at a level comparable with the greats of the position. Asked how he sees his own profile, the Athletic player described himself as a calm, composed keeper who tries to bring that temperament into key moments.

Athletic identity remains central

Beyond the individual award, Simón also looked back to Athletic’s recent push for major honours. The club finished second when pursuing the same objective two years ago, and he hopes they can go one better this season.

For the Murgia-born goalkeeper, however, the greater satisfaction lies in representing Athletic with the principles he learned growing up: remaining loyal to one club and carrying its colours with conviction.

He also reflected on the people who helped bring him to the London ceremony, saying many had been part of the journey and that he hoped they would have the opportunity to thank them properly afterwards.
