The lights had barely dimmed on France’s 1-1 draw with Italy when Dayot Upamecano’s international break came to an abrupt end. After an outstanding 80 minutes, the Bayern Munich defender was sent off for a second booking and will miss Monday’s meeting with Belgium.
A strong display undone by late dismissal
Upamecano started Friday’s match against Italy and produced an impressive performance for much of the evening. The France centre-back had completed around 80 minutes before his night turned sharply, receiving a second yellow card and being dismissed.

Defender released from France squad
The 25-year-old returned to Clairefontaine with the rest of the France squad late on Friday night. With no role available to him against Belgium because of suspension, he was released back to Bayern Munich.
Upamecano left the national-team camp at 9.30am on Saturday, allowing him to rejoin his club ahead of the return of the domestic season.
