Viking vs Bayern Munich: Champions League Matchday 2 in Stavanger

Bayern Munich take their first Champions League away trip of the league phase to Stavanger on Tuesday, with Viking needing a response after opening their campaign with defeat.

The Matchday 2 meeting is scheduled for 13 October at the Lyse Arena, also referred to as the Viking Stadion, with kick-off set for 2:00 p.m. Colombia time. Vincent Kompany’s side arrive in Norway on three points, while the hosts are still looking for their first points.

Quick facts

  • Match: Viking FK v Bayern Munich
  • Competition: Champions League, league phase, Matchday 2
  • Venue: Lyse Arena, Stavanger
  • Date: Tuesday, 13 October
  • Kick-off: 2:00 p.m. Colombia time
  • Bayern’s opening result: 5-0 win against Bodø/Glimt on 10 September
  • Next European fixture for Bayern: Arsenal at home on Matchday 3

Bayern began the competition with a five-goal victory over Bodø/Glimt, a result that placed them among the early leaders with a plus-five goal difference. The trip to Viking is their first European match away from Munich in this league-phase run.

The German champions, however, travel after a 2-2 Bundesliga draw with Augsburg. Manuel Neuer is unavailable because of a foot problem, leaving Jonas Urbig to start in goal.

Urbig is named behind a Bayern side featuring Minjae, Tah, Kimmich and Bischof, with Kane, Brown and Luis Díaz also selected. Olise, Laimer and Karl complete the listed line-up.

Bayern will wear their customary red kit in Stavanger, while their goalkeepers are due to play in grey. For Viking, the occasion brings the task of stopping a side that made a forceful start to Europe and now wants to carry that momentum into a demanding Norwegian night.
