Villarreal Seek First Champions League Win Against Napoli

Champions League music returns to La Cerámica with Villarreal needing more than a ceremonial European evening. Iñigo Pérez’s side welcome Napoli knowing that a first victory in the league phase would steady a campaign already facing a daunting route through Liverpool and reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain.

A night to change the European mood

Villarreal opened their Champions League programme with a 3-2 defeat away to Borussia Dortmund. Although they left Germany empty-handed, the Yellow Submarine remained in contention until the final moments and showed more than the result alone suggested.

The meeting with Napoli offers an immediate chance to turn that encouraging performance into points. Both clubs began the league phase with defeats, making the contest in Castellón particularly significant for two teams trying to avoid falling behind early in the competition.

  • Villarreal are seeking their first three points of this season’s Champions League.
  • Napoli also arrive after losing their opening league-phase match.
  • A home win would give Villarreal greater breathing room before two exceptionally difficult fixtures.
  • Failure to beat Napoli would increase the pressure to take points against leading contenders later in the schedule.

There is also a recent European record to put right at La Cerámica. Villarreal did not win a match in last season’s Champions League campaign, and the club need to make their home ground a source of points if they are to progress this time.

Improvement at home, but a demanding visitor

Pérez’s team have shown better form in recent weeks. Even in their defeat to Real Madrid, there were signs of a side developing greater confidence and sharper performances. The task now is to carry that domestic improvement into continental football.

Alberto Moleiro could be central to that attempt, with his ability to receive in crowded areas between the lines and create danger. Ilias Akhomach’s direct running is another potential route to opening space against a Napoli side expected to provide a stern test.

In goal, Gulácsi has begun to bring greater calm and consistency, though Villarreal will require stronger collective defending in front of him. Napoli possess experience and quality, including Kevin De Bruyne, so concentration will be required throughout the 90 minutes even if the Italian team have not recently been producing particularly attractive football.

Scott McTominay is available again for Napoli, although he is still not fully comfortable physically.

The road beyond Napoli

The importance of this match is sharpened by what follows. Villarreal travel to Anfield after facing Napoli, before PSG — the current European champions — come to La Cerámica.

  1. Napoli visit Villarreal in the Champions League league phase.
  2. Villarreal then travel to Liverpool at Anfield.
  3. PSG subsequently arrive in Castellón.

Those two later assignments leave little margin for error. A positive result against Napoli would allow Villarreal to approach the next rounds with more composure; a defeat or draw would leave them needing to find points against two of the competition’s most formidable opponents.

Pérez has expressed confidence in what his players can achieve, but he will do without Buchanan and Pépé, both absent for the Napoli match. Under the lights at La Cerámica, Villarreal’s European season is already asking for a statement.
