Roma’s international break has begun with another setback for Wesley, whose difficult relationship with Brazil continues after a fresh injury ruled him out of Carlo Ancelotti’s next friendlies.
The Roma wide player had recently returned to the Seleção squad after missing the World Cup through injury, only to withdraw again with discomfort in his right thigh. Brazil have called up Monaco’s Vanderson in his place, confirming that he is replacing the injured Roma player.
Wesley completed the full 90 minutes of Roma’s 2-2 draw with Inter at the Olimpico, but will now remain at Trigoria rather than join the national side. For the Giallorossi, it is an unwanted interruption in the player’s season after his previous World Cup disappointment.
Roma monitor Cristante ahead of Italy duty
Wesley may not be the only Roma player staying behind during the break. Captain Bryan Cristante is also being assessed after leaving the Inter match with muscle fatigue.
Cristante has been selected by new Italy coach Roberto Mancini for the upcoming Nations League fixtures, although his condition leaves his involvement in doubt. Roma will follow the situation closely, with the midfielder an important figure in the side’s early-season work.
Time for Dybala and Pellegrini
The pause in the club calendar should offer Paulo Dybala a chance to recover after the heavy demands placed on him by Gian Piero Gasperini during the opening weeks of the campaign.
Lorenzo Pellegrini, meanwhile, has only recently resumed training with the group. The break gives him further time to rebuild his match fitness and regain the physical sharpness Roma will need when Serie A resumes.
