Cleveland waited a week to bring postseason baseball back to Progressive Field, but Game 1 left the home clubhouse looking for answers. The AL Central champions were blanked 3-0 by the White Sox on Saturday, managing three hits against five Chicago pitchers and falling behind in the best-of-five American League Division Series.
A quiet return to October
The ballpark was sold out, with red filling the stands well before the first pitch. Northeast Ohio had spent the week building toward the Guardians’ postseason opener after Cleveland’s division title earned the club a first-round bye.
That energy never found its way into the Guardians’ offense. Cleveland drew five walks and put seven runners on base, but went 0-for-3 with men in scoring position.
- White Sox opener Hagen Smith held Cleveland without a hit through 2 2/3 scoreless innings.
- Smith issued three walks in the third inning, allowing the Guardians to load the bases.
- Chicago turned to left-hander Bryan Hudson, who retired Chase DeLauter on a line drive to left field to close the inning.
- Cleveland mounted another two-out chance in the fourth when Nathaniel Lowe and Austin Hedges walked around Travis Bazzana’s double, again filling the bases.
- Brayan Rocchio lined out to right field, and the second bases-loaded opportunity disappeared.
The offense must find its late-season form
The shutout resembled the Guardians’ uneven offensive work from the season’s opening months more than the club that improved sharply down the stretch. Cleveland ended the regular season ranked 24th in the Majors at 4.19 runs per game and 26th with a .696 team OPS.
After adding Jo Adell and Nathaniel Lowe before the Trade Deadline, the lineup showed more life. From Aug. 3 through the end of the regular season, the Guardians scored 232 runs, eighth-most in baseball over that span, while their .731 OPS was tied for ninth.
None of that production surfaced Saturday. In a short series, the missed chances carry extra weight, especially after Chicago took the opener on the road.
| Game 1 offensive line | Guardians |
|---|---|
| Runs | 0 |
| Hits | 3 |
| Walks | 5 |
| Runners left on base | 7 |
| With runners in scoring position | 0-for-3 |
The series pressure arrives early
Game 1 is not a formal verdict, but history gives the club that takes it a substantial edge. Teams with a 1-0 lead in best-of-five postseason series have won 116 of 160 matchups, a 73% rate. In Division Series played under the current 2-2-1 arrangement, road teams winning the opener have advanced 35 times in 48 series, also 73%.
That leaves Cleveland with little room for another quiet afternoon. Game 2 is scheduled for Monday at 5 p.m. ET, with the Guardians needing their lineup to turn its late-season progress into October runs.
