Why Diego Simeone Pushed Atlético Madrid to Sign Cristian Romero

Madrid has found another Argentine voice at the heart of Atlético’s defence, and Cristian Romero’s growing standing with the national team offers a clear explanation for Diego Simeone’s determination to bring him to the Spanish capital. The coach made the centre-back one of his central wishes during the summer window, pressing for a deal that eventually placed the 27-year-old in Atlético colours.

Romero arrived with the forceful reputation built during his international career, but his latest appearance for Argentina carried an added distinction. In the 4-0 friendly victory over Bolivia, he wore the captain’s armband for the first time, a landmark that puts him among the figures expected to shape the next chapter of the world champions.

A defender valued beyond his fitness concerns

Lionel Scaloni has underlined why Romero remains so important to Argentina, describing him as one of the outstanding central defenders in world football. The Argentina coach suggested that, when fully fit, Romero can stand with the very best in his position.

His recent condition has not always allowed him to play at his preferred level. Scaloni acknowledged that the defender had not been at full capacity lately, recalling that Romero was also below the desired physical level during the last World Cup. Even so, Argentina repeatedly chose to keep him involved because of the extra authority and quality he brings to the side.

That faith comes from more than his defensive aggression. Scaloni highlighted Romero’s passing ability and called him a special player, qualities that help explain why Simeone saw him as such an important addition for Atlético’s evolving back line.

The responsibility of the armband

There was also a note of caution from the Argentina manager. Romero’s competitive edge can occasionally lead to mistimed challenges, and Scaloni believes this is the principal aspect of his game that still needs refining.

The issue takes on greater importance now that he has become Argentina captain. Scaloni said Romero’s conduct must set the right example, while expressing confidence that the defender will understand the responsibility. For Atlético, the signing is therefore not simply a reinforcement from Argentina’s celebrated generation, but a player entering a broader leadership role on both sides of the Atlantic.
