Germany lost Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz to muscle injuries during the 1-1 draw in Amsterdam, Jürgen Klopp’s first match as national-team coach. Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Burkardt have been called up as replacements for the remaining international fixtures.
Germany had been close to winning Klopp’s debut before conceding an equaliser in stoppage time. The more immediate concern was the loss of two attacking players, one before kick-off and one during the first half.
Musiala returns to Bayern Munich
Musiala had been selected to start but was forced out during the warm-up. Nadiem Amiri replaced him and made his 14th Germany appearance.
Examinations confirmed a muscle-fibre tear in Musiala’s right thigh. The German Football Association did not set a return date, leaving Bayern Munich’s immediate plans uncertain.
The 23-year-old had been due to remain with the squad after the opening two matches, alongside Finn Dahmen, Nico Schlotterbeck and Serge Gnabry. Instead, he will return to Munich for treatment.
Klopp described the setback as “the worst that could have happened”, but noted that Musiala’s injury was a normal football problem rather than an issue connected to his previous neurological illness. For the player, Klopp said, that also represented “a step back towards normality”.
Havertz also leaves camp
Havertz came off in the 27th minute after feeling his left hamstring. Younes Ebnoutalib replaced the Arsenal forward, whose 63rd international ended early.
The diagnosis is a muscle strain. Havertz had initially been expected to stay for Sunday’s Nations League match against Greece, but will now leave the squad. He had not been planned for the later games against Serbia on 1 October and away to Greece on 4 October.
Wirtz and Burkardt arrive from the second part of Klopp’s expanded squad as Germany adjust their attacking options for the next matches.
