Wuhan Open Media Day Sets the Stage for WTA 1000 Main-Draw Action

The Dongfeng Voyah Wuhan Open moves into main-draw action on Monday, October 12, with the WTA 1000 field completing its final media commitments around the city before competition begins.

Wuhan’s return has already brought familiar comfort for one of the tournament’s three-time champions, who described the event as a place where past success makes the conditions feel welcoming and familiar.

Another contender underlined the importance of the final Asian swing before the WTA Finals, saying Wuhan offered both valuable match play and another opportunity to chase a WTA 1000 title. She said her appearance had always been part of the plan, rather than skipping Beijing and arriving fresh in Wuhan.

The quick switch from Beijing was also a talking point. One player said she had already reviewed her defeat to Elise Mertens, accepted that Mertens produced a strong performance, and was ready to turn her attention to the next challenge in Wuhan.

Draw developments in Wuhan

The tournament draw could set up a first meeting of the 2026 season between Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals.

Linda Noskova will not take her place in the field after withdrawing with a left calf injury.

Marta Kostyuk has received a first-round bye and will begin her campaign in the second round. Before the tournament, she visited Wuhan Wushang Dream Plaza, where she rode a roller coaster, met robots and attended an entertainment performance.

Alexandra Eala spent time at Wuhan’s East Lake, one of China’s biggest freshwater lakes, meeting supporters and rallying on a small grass court beside the water.

Monday night session

Eala will open her Wuhan campaign against Chinese qualifier Shi Han in the final match of Monday’s night programme on Center Court.
