Yannick Cahuzac has stepped out from the shadow of the Lens bench and into its most exposed seat, with Friday’s trip to Monaco arriving almost as soon as the club confirmed his promotion. The former assistant has replaced Dino Toppmöller as RC Lens head coach, accepting that his first full managerial role will require a rapid education.

Named head coach on Tuesday following Toppmöller’s departure, Cahuzac said the past few days had been “extremely intense” but that his attention quickly moved to the Monaco match. He described the fixture as significant both for the club and the squad, who have had to process another difficult week at La Gaillette.
The new Lens coach found his players committed in training despite the upheaval. He praised a group he said had remained hard-working even before the change of staff, and revealed that much of the immediate work had centred on restoring defensive stability and giving the team clearer attacking reference points.
Cahuzac believes Lens have become too stretched when playing too directly, leaving the side unable to remain compact and vulnerable to opponents breaking through their block. He has therefore placed particular emphasis on the team’s defensive organisation, while insisting that the attacking structure must also improve if Lens are to find the right balance.
His preferred shape will remain a back three, although Cahuzac stressed that a formation means little without the movements and principles within it. His football will be rooted in the Lens identity: possession, intensity and an aggressive collective approach.
“Lens principles are among my own first principles,” he said. “Franck Haise had a major tactical influence on me. I like my teams to have the ball and to play with intensity, and that belongs to this club’s DNA.”
Cahuzac worked under Haise and also cited Régis Le Bris and Olivier Pantaloni among the coaches who have helped shape his tactical thinking. While he said he will experience games with more calm than he did as a player, he acknowledged that the position brings responsibilities beyond the training pitch.
“Age has helped me,” he said. “I am much calmer now. As a coach, you are less directly involved than you are as a player, so I will be more composed.”
A coach still learning the role
Cahuzac did not hide the fact that Lens struggled to build a connection with the previous staff. He said those around Toppmöller had tried to support the former coach and correct the problems, but felt that the necessary bridge between the new staff and the wider club never truly formed.
Questions have also been raised over Cahuzac’s relationship with Lens sporting director Jean-Louis Leca. The new coach said such claims did not affect him personally because he tries to shut out outside noise, but he believes they can damage the image of the club.
He underlined that Leca does not make decisions alone and said Lens are not a club that acts carelessly, given the number of employees and the stakes involved. Cahuzac instead pointed to the practical advantages of his appointment: he knows the institution, its values, its football culture, the players and the squad’s capabilities after working on the staff.
The season will also include his ongoing examinations for the BEPF, the French professional coaching qualification. Cahuzac accepted that it will be a demanding year, but said he would not have accepted the role if he did not feel ready for it.
Still, he was candid about his development. He said the tactical and training-ground side of coaching comes naturally to him, while media duties and communication are less comfortable. Cahuzac does not yet see himself as a finished number one, but regards this appointment as the next stage of becoming one.
“I do not have the complete package yet,” he said. “I am a coach in development, working towards my BEPF with excellent instructors. I do not consider myself a fully formed head coach yet, but I am becoming one.”
