October does not leave much room for a team to hide. A club carrying Fall Classic expectations can look built for a long run one night and be packing for home the next, depending on the health of its rotation, the reliability of its bullpen and whether its lineup can turn chances into runs when the margin narrows.
The postseason has always asked for more than a strong regular-season record. Teams playing deep into late October usually get steady innings from their starters, clean work from the relief corps and timely at-bats from the middle of the order. Those that exit early often find that one cold stretch, one short start or one missed opportunity can undo months of good work.
For every contender, the question is simple as the calendar turns: does the roster have enough pitching, enough depth and enough poise for the games that decide a season? The answer will determine whether October becomes a march toward the Fall Classic or a quick trip home.
