Spain will travel to the United States without Aitana Bonmatí after the Barcelona midfielder was omitted from Sonia Bermúdez’s 25-player squad for the forthcoming international friendlies in Washington and Philadelphia.
Bonmatí is still not fully recovered from the syndesmosis fracture near her left ankle, sustained while training with Spain late last year. The Sant Pere de Ribes-born midfielder will therefore miss two high-profile meetings with Emma Hayes’s United States side.
Spain face the Americans in Washington on the 10th before heading north to Philadelphia for the second match on the 14th. With World Cup qualification already secured, the fixtures give Bermúdez an opportunity to assess her group in demanding opposition away from home rather than prepare for a competitive qualifier.
