Napoli left Villarreal with a 3-1 defeat and a familiar Champions League lesson ringing around them: at this level, a single lapse can become a difficult evening. Massimiliano Allegri said his side lacked the balance needed to manage the contest after Villarreal punished them, and accepted that Napoli had not done enough to take a positive result from Spain.
The Italian coach did not blame Matteo Politano for the mistake that led to Villarreal’s opening goal, describing errors as part of football. His greater concern was Napoli’s response after they had drawn level, when the side lost composure rather than settling into the match.
“A mistake can happen,” Allegri said. “A strong team like Napoli must remain calm and keep playing.”
For Allegri, the loss underlined the standard demanded in the Champions League, where he said the quality is exceptionally high and shortcomings are exposed more sharply. Napoli must find a different equilibrium in the way they approach such fixtures, he added, particularly when the game swings against them.
The coach also pointed to two areas requiring improvement: limiting the number of shots allowed at their own goal and becoming more effective in possession. Napoli, he said, need to be better on the ball if they are to navigate European nights of this intensity, where minor mistakes carry heavier consequences.
