Olise Sees First Career Red as Bayern Draw 3-3 with Viking

In Stavanger, Bayern Munich’s recovery from two goals down against Viking was interrupted by a rare moment of indiscipline from Michael Olise. The French forward, a reported Real Madrid target for the summer, received the first red card of his career as the Champions League match finished 3-3.

The news from the club

Olise was dismissed in the 84th minute, shortly after Bayern had turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead. He was first booked for pulling Henrik Heggheim from behind, then immediately shown a second yellow card after throwing the ball into Zlatko Tripic’s face.

The sending-off means Olise will be unavailable when Bayern host Arsenal in Munich next Wednesday.

Vincent Kompany said the player understood the error and was visibly remorseful after the final whistle. The Bayern coach accepted that such incidents can happen, but stressed that apparently smaller Champions League moments may still shape a season.

“He knows he made a mistake,” Kompany said. “You could see he was sorry and regretted letting the team down. That is fine, because these things happen. It was not a final or a semi-final, but moments like this can still have a decisive influence on a season.”

Kompany added that Olise had been outsmarted by the opponent and urged his side’s leading players to avoid needless confrontations when Bayern hold the stronger hand in a match. “When you are clearly better, sometimes you simply have to play your football and concentrate on being the better team,” he said. “We cannot change it now. Hopefully, we will look back on it as a lesson learned.”

Arsenal visit Munich next

Bayern will now prepare for Arsenal without Olise, following a night on Norway’s west coast that brought both a spirited comeback and an avoidable suspension. The draw with Viking leaves Kompany’s side to take the lesson into a major European appointment at home.
