Manchester City have been urged to shut out the noise beyond the training ground after their emphatic win at Anfield, but the club’s wider situation is continuing to draw attention in Westminster.
Andy Burnham has said he will publish details of meetings held with City’s leadership after facing criticism over remarks made following the club being found guilty of Premier League charges.
Quick facts
- Enzo Maresca said City must block out the outside distractions around the club.
- Andy Burnham plans to release details of his meetings with City officials.
- He said the request came from the Leader of the Opposition.
- Burnham said there had been only one significant meeting, in 2021.
- That meeting took place while he was Mayor of Greater Manchester.
Burnham said he was happy to make the information public after being asked to do so by the opposition leader. He said the disclosure would set out plainly what he had done in his previous role working with the club.
“The Leader of the Opposition has asked me to publish the details of my meetings, and I will gladly do that,” Burnham said. “I will make absolutely clear what I did while working with them as Mayor of Greater Manchester.”
He insisted there was nothing recent in his contact with City. “I had only one important meeting, and that was in 2021,” he said.
The scrutiny comes at a time when City are being asked to keep their focus on football. Maresca’s message after the Anfield win was that the club must prevent events away from the pitch from taking over the week.
