From Toluca to the wider Argentine conversation, Antonio Mohamed has made no attempt to conceal the ambition that still accompanies his long coaching career. The 56-year-old believes he is ready, one day, to take charge of Argentina’s national team as uncertainty lingers over Lionel Scaloni’s future beyond December 2026.
Speaking during an interview, Mohamed said the national post represents the highest possible honour for him. “You always dream of it and feel capable after such a long journey,” he said, pointing to four decades in football and more than 20 years as a manager.

Known as “El Turco”, Mohamed said he has been part of dressing rooms since making his playing debut in 1986. “I am prepared,” he said, adding that Argentina remains a deeply personal target because he supports the national side himself.
His coaching route has crossed Mexico, Argentina, Spain and Brazil. In Argentina, he managed Huracán, Colón and Independiente, leading the latter to the 2010 Copa Sudamericana. His overseas stops have also included Celta de Vigo and Atlético Mineiro.
Mexico has provided the bulk of Mohamed’s silverware and much of his defining work. He won league honours with Tijuana, América and Monterrey, while also taking charge of Morelia, Querétaro, Chiapas, Veracruz and Pumas.
At Toluca, the run has become historic. Mohamed arrived at the Red Devils near the end of 2024 and has already become the most decorated manager in the club’s history, lifting the Clausura 2025, Campeón de Campeones 2025, Campeones Cup 2025, Apertura 2025, Concacaf Champions Cup 2026 and Leagues Cup 2026.
The latest trophy came in Houston, where Toluca defeated Monterrey 2-0 in the 2026 Leagues Cup final. Alexis Vega and Helinho scored the goals, adding another landmark night to Mohamed’s Mexican chapter as he openly keeps Argentina in view.
