North London waited until the final quarter before Arsenal found a way through Lille’s disciplined resistance, then Mikel Arteta’s side turned a tight Champions League evening into a 3-0 win at the Emirates Stadium.
The reigning Premier League champions and last season’s European runners-up had controlled possession throughout, but Davide Ancelotti’s Lille arrived with an organised, stubborn defensive plan. Second in Ligue 1, one point behind leaders Monaco, the French visitors kept Arsenal scoreless through the opening hour of the second matchday in the league phase.
David Raya was scarcely called into action at the other end. Arsenal’s difficulty was converting territorial command into a breakthrough, with Lille goalkeeper Berke Ozer making an important low save from Bruno Guimaraes and Mikel Merino also going close with a header.
Timber opens the door
Jurriën Timber finally changed the mood in the 64th minute. Supplied by Noni Madueke, the Dutch defender used a clever self-pass to create room before lifting a composed finish beyond Ozer for the opening goal.
Arteta had begun with several regular starters on the bench, including Bukayo Saka. The England international entered in the 65th minute for Madueke, while Kai Havertz replaced Viktor Gyökeres at the same time.
The substitutions quickly deepened Arsenal’s advantage. Timber helped win back possession for the move that ended with Eberechi Eze scoring in the 67th minute, finishing from Saka’s delivery after an influential second-half display.
Saka then completed the scoring four minutes later. Havertz provided the assist as Arsenal struck their third goal in a seven-minute spell, ending Lille’s hopes of preserving the draw they had defended for so effectively.
Second win for Arsenal, another setback for Lille
Arsenal had opened their Champions League league-phase campaign with a 1-0 victory away to Napoli, and the win over Lille makes it two from two. In the Premier League, Arteta’s team are second, three points behind Manchester City.
Lille leave London with a second defeat in the competition. Their opening fixture ended in a 3-2 loss to Real Betis, and Ancelotti’s side could not turn an impressive first-hour performance at the Emirates into their first European points of the campaign.
