Arsenal are set to tie Mikel Arteta to a new long-term contract after a season in which the Spaniard delivered the Premier League title and took the club to a European runners-up finish.

The new agreement reflects the backing Arteta has earned from Arsenal’s ownership following the club’s success last season. Winning the league and reaching the final stages of Europe has moved the manager from a rebuild figure to the established centre of the project.
Stan Kroenke, Arsenal’s principal shareholder, is understood to have placed full trust in Arteta’s work. Kroenke, one of America’s wealthiest businessmen, has an estimated fortune of around $21.3bn.
For Arsenal, the extension would provide continuity at a time when the champions will be looking to defend their domestic crown and turn a European near-miss into another step forward. Arteta’s contract may not have been close to its end, but football’s best plans tend to look sturdier when the manager’s future is settled before the window and the fixture list begin to bite.
