Augsburg Aim to Repeat Shock Win as Bayern Visit Bavaria Rival

FC Augsburg host Bayern Munich on Saturday in the Bundesliga’s only current all-Bavarian meeting. Bayern’s record across the state is strong, but Augsburg arrive with a recent reminder: their 2-1 win in Munich in January remains Bayern’s sole league defeat over the past 18 months.

Quick facts

  • Bayern have faced six Bavarian clubs in the Bundesliga since reaching the top flight in 1965.
  • They won all four league matches against both Greuther Fürth and FC Ingolstadt.
  • Against Augsburg, Bayern have 23 wins and five defeats from 30 Bundesliga games.
  • TSV 1860 Munich are Bayern’s toughest Bavarian Bundesliga opponent by points average: 1.94 per match across 36 meetings.
  • Bayern’s last first-round DFB-Pokal exit came at TSV Vestenbergsgreuth in 1994.

Ingolstadt and Greuther Fürth have both supplied Bayern with four wins from four. Bayern sealed Pep Guardiola’s third and final Bundesliga title in charge at Ingolstadt on matchday 33 of 2015-16, with Robert Lewandowski scoring twice in a 2-1 away victory.

SpVgg Unterhaching managed one win in four Bundesliga meetings with Bayern between 1999 and 2001. Miroslav Spizak scored the only goal at the Sportpark on 17 February 2001, although the result did not keep Unterhaching up.

The first meeting, in August 1999, brought Roque Santa Cruz’s first Bundesliga goal. The then 18-year-old scored in his second league appearance as Bayern won 1-0. Bayern’s three victories against Unterhaching produce an average of 2.25 points per game.

1. FC Nürnberg have met Bayern 62 times in the Bundesliga. Bayern’s record is 38 wins, 13 draws and 11 losses, worth exactly 2.5 points per game under the modern points system.

Nürnberg’s 7-3 victory during their 1967-68 title campaign remains one of the standout results. Franz Brungs struck five times. Bayern won the final match played by the two sides at the Olympiastadion, beating Nürnberg 6-3 in May 2005, but Samuel Slovak scored the last goal at the old stadium.

The clubs last met in a competitive game in late April 2019. Bayern went on to win the title that season, while Nürnberg were relegated and have not returned to the Bundesliga.

1860 München hold Bayern to their lowest Bavarian points return in Bundesliga history. Bayern lost their first top-flight derby against the Lions, 1-0 on the opening matchday in 1965. Thomas Riedl’s long-range winner in November 1999 gave 1860 their first derby success in 22 years.

Augsburg have beaten Bayern five times in league play. Bayern still average 2.37 points per Bundesliga meeting with FCA, but January’s defeat at the Allianz Arena gives Saturday’s visitors a recent reference point.

Bavarian ties have also produced notable DFB-Pokal shocks. Bayern beat Nürnberg 4-2 in the 1982 final, with Dieter Hoeneß playing on after suffering a head injury. Franck Ribéry decided the last Munich derby in the competition, converting a penalty in the 120th minute for a 1-0 win over 1860 in 2008.

SpVgg Bayreuth, never a Bundesliga club, defeated Bayern 1-0 at home in the third round in January 1980, on a snow-covered pitch. TSV Vestenbergsgreuth then produced an even more enduring upset in 1994, beating a Bayern side featuring Lothar Matthäus and Oliver Kahn 1-0 through Roland Stein. It remains Bayern’s most recent defeat in the opening round of the cup.
