Austin Ekeler is set to return to the Washington Commanders, with the veteran running back expected to join the 53-man roster once he completes his physical.
The 31-year-old gives Washington another experienced option in a backfield that has struggled to establish a reliable rushing attack through the first three weeks of the season. Ekeler recently worked out for the Carolina Panthers, but will instead reunite with the Commanders after spending the past two years in Washington.
Ekeler returns after Achilles recovery
Ekeler appeared in only two games last season before an Achilles tear ended his year. He is now considered fully recovered and will attempt to resume a career that began as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Chargers.
During seven seasons with the Chargers, Ekeler developed into one of the NFL’s more productive multipurpose backs, combining effective rushing production with a major role in the passing game.
His first Washington season, in 2024, was also affected by injuries. In 14 appearances, Ekeler carried 91 times for 410 yards and four touchdowns. He added 40 receptions for 404 yards, giving the Commanders a dependable receiving threat out of the backfield when available.
Washington seeking more from its rushing attack
The Commanders’ current running backs have yet to find much consistency on the ground. Jacory Croskey-Merritt leads the group with 142 rushing yards and one touchdown on 47 carries, averaging 3.02 yards per attempt.
Rachaad White has produced 100 rushing yards on 22 attempts while contributing as a receiver, catching nine passes for 51 yards and a touchdown.
Ekeler’s return could give Washington added depth and a proven pass-catching option as the club looks for more balance from its offense. His signing remains contingent on the physical.
