Bayern Munich enter the Bundesliga week with a public split inside the supervisory board over sporting director Max Eberl’s new contract.
- Max Eberl’s Bayern contract was extended at the end of August until 2029.
- Chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen also signed a deal running to 2029.
- Both previous contracts had been due to end in 2027.
- Supervisory board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge abstained from the vote on Eberl’s extension.
- Rummenigge said he considered voting against the renewal before deciding during the meeting to abstain.
- The 71-year-old said he wanted to make an independent decision and had raised internal concerns about matters before the vote.
- Eberl, 53, took over as Bayern sporting director in March 2024. He had previously played in the club’s academy.
- Before returning to Munich, Eberl was placed on leave by RB Leipzig after questions over his commitment amid possible Bayern interest.
- Uli Hoeneß had publicly put Eberl’s chances of an extension at “60 to 40” last May, during the DFB-Pokal final weekend against VfB Stuttgart.
- Hoeneß apologised for those remarks in late July. The extension followed a few weeks later.
What it changes in the Bundesliga week
There is no change to Bayern’s sporting structure. Eberl remains in place through 2029, alongside Dreesen, with the board having approved both renewals.
But Rummenigge’s abstention confirms that Eberl’s early months have not removed all internal doubts. Bayern’s 2024 coach search had already brought criticism, while concerns were reported internally over the sporting director’s dealings with players and agents.
The contract gives Eberl long-term authority. The latest board comments show that scrutiny around recruitment, wages and major sporting decisions will remain close.
