The Chicago Bears are weighing a three-way quarterback decision for Week 4 against the New York Jets after Case Keenum’s standout Monday night start, while Caleb Williams and Tyson Bagent continue to factor into coach Ben Johnson’s plans.
What changed for the franchise
Johnson declined Wednesday to name a starter for the home game against the Jets, saying Chicago would use the practice week to assess all three quarterbacks.
Keenum, 38, delivered a commanding performance in the Bears’ 20-point victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night. The 14-year veteran completed 24 of 34 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns after moving into the starting role.
Chicago’s quarterback depth chart shifted quickly after Williams suffered a hamstring injury in the Week 2 loss to Minnesota. Bagent, listed ahead of Keenum as the backup, also entered concussion protocol after that game. Keenum, officially the team’s third quarterback, took advantage of the opportunity against Philadelphia.
Williams, the Madden NFL 27 cover athlete, remains part of the decision, as does Bagent. Johnson said Keenum’s performance will be considered, but he stopped short of confirming that the veteran will retain the job.
“We are considering the full picture,” Johnson said. “He played very well Monday night, and that certainly matters in the evaluation.”
Johnson said he has already settled on a plan for the Jets matchup but will not disclose the selection before the game, keeping the quarterback situation from becoming an advantage for New York’s preparation.
The coach expressed confidence in the entire room, saying each of the three passers is capable of winning games for Chicago.
