It was far from Dortmund’s most convincing display. The home side struggled for rhythm in attack and created little against a disciplined Stuttgart team.
Ethan Nwaneri thought he had put Dortmund ahead, but his effort was ruled out for offside. The breakthrough eventually arrived after Bellingham was introduced, with the English midfielder picking out Beier for the decisive goal.
The result made it four league victories from four for Dortmund, the only Bundesliga side to maintain a perfect start to the campaign.
Bayern Munich had strengthened their position with a dominant victory over Union Berlin on Friday night, but remain two points behind the leaders. Freiburg are level with Bayern after drawing 2-2 at Frankfurt on Saturday.
