In Sosnowiec, where the ArcelorMittal Park hosts a double bill of under-20 World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, Brazil’s young women arrive with the memory of a tense penalty shoot-out still fresh. Camila Orlando’s side face Spain at 13:30 Brasília time, seeking a place in the last four of a tournament they have never won.
The news from the club
Brazil reached the quarter-finals after eliminating the United States in the round of 16. The match finished 1-1 after normal time and extra time, before Brazil prevailed 5-4 on penalties. Goalkeeper Thaís Lima made a decisive save in the shoot-out and described qualification as “a very great emotion”.
The Brazilian campaign had begun with a perfect Group B record. They beat Tanzania 4-1, Canada 3-0 and England 2-1 to collect nine points and finish first. A semi-final place would be Brazil’s fifth in the history of the women’s Under-20 World Cup.
Spain provide a formidable opponent. The 2022 champions, runners-up in 2018, are pursuing their third semi-final appearance. David Aznar’s team topped Group F after defeating Nigeria 2-0, New Caledonia 11-0 and China 3-1, then beat Portugal 2-0 in the last 16.
Spain have conceded only once throughout the competition, setting up a meeting between Brazil’s unbeaten group winners and the tournament’s most guarded defence. The World Cup is also the first edition played under FIFA’s new rule concerning women on coaching staffs.
The route through Sosnowiec
The quarter-final is a single-match tie. If the teams remain level after 90 minutes and extra time, the semi-finalist will again be decided from the penalty spot.
The winner will meet either South Korea or Italy, who play at the same stadium earlier on Saturday, at 10:00 Brasília time.
