Christian Yelich’s jersey carried a new mark Saturday night at American Family Field, but the Brewers’ decision was about a role he had been filling for years.
Milwaukee formally named Yelich its team captain before the penultimate game of its record-setting regular season against the Cardinals, placing a “C” on the 33-year-old’s uniform. The club made the announcement in a players-only meeting, giving official recognition to the leadership teammates had long seen from the veteran outfielder and designated hitter.
There was one important call before the Brewers moved ahead. Yelich asked that the organization speak with Hall of Famer Robin Yount first. Manager Pat Murphy said Yount gave his full support, with Yelich viewing the franchise icon as Milwaukee’s original captain even though Yount never wore the designation.

Yelich became one of three active major leaguers carrying the captain title, alongside Yankees star Aaron Judge and Royals catcher Salvador Perez. Inside the Milwaukee clubhouse, the label was hardly new. Some Brewers have already called him “Cap.”
There is a small thread of club history in the nickname. Sal Bando, known as “Captain Sal” with Oakland during the 1970s, arrived in Milwaukee as the franchise’s first free-agent signing before the 1977 season. He accepted the same nickname with the Brewers, though teams at that time did not put a captain’s “C” on a jersey.
A standard set over nine seasons
Yelich joined the Brewers in January 2018 in the trade that sent him from Miami, on the same day Milwaukee signed Lorenzo Cain. With young arms Brandon Woodruff, Corbin Burnes and Freddy Peralta coming through, the group helped deliver an NL Central crown that first season.
The run has kept going. Milwaukee has reached October in eight of the past nine years, won six division championships in that stretch and captured each of the last four NL Central titles. Yelich won the National League MVP in 2018, finished second the following year and signed a record-setting extension in the spring of 2020 that tied his future closely to the franchise.
Though he has shifted more regularly into designated hitter work, Yelich remained a productive piece of the lineup. He made his third All-Star team in 2024, then produced 29 homers and 103 RBIs in 2025.
This season has been more difficult at the plate, with Yelich entering Saturday at a .697 OPS and 0.2 bWAR. His teammates’ decision, then, was not a reward for a hot stretch. It was a statement about the player they believe sets the tone in the room.
Murphy said Yelich has led since he first put on a Brewers uniform, doing it in a manner true to his personality. The manager pointed to the standards Yelich reinforces: winning baseball, professionalism and the way Milwaukee expects its players to carry themselves. In Murphy’s view, the club simply reached the point where the captaincy deserved to be made official.
