Arsenal’s perfect start vanished on the south coast as Brighton swept the champions aside with a 3-0 win, a result that reshaped the top of the Premier League without Manchester City even taking the field.
Brighton turn pressure into a statement win
Fabian Hürzeler’s side climbed provisionally into third place after a deserved victory at the Amex Stadium, pending Sunday’s Leeds United-Sunderland match. Their high press, organised well up the pitch, repeatedly unsettled an Arsenal team that had won seven successive matches in all competitions before this trip.
- Pascal Gross opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a powerful effort from range, with Riccardo Calafiori unable to close him down effectively.
- Charalampos Kostoulas made it 2-0 shortly before half-time, again striking from distance as Gabriel gave him too much room.
- Chema Andres headed in Brighton’s third from Gross’s corner, taking advantage of another static moment in the Arsenal defence.
Gross continued a strong week after also playing a key role in Brighton’s 3-2 League Cup victory at Manchester United. Against Arsenal, he supplied both a goal and the delivery for Andres’s header.
Arsenal lose top spot
The defeat was Arsenal’s first of the season and cost them first place on goal difference. Manchester City moved into the lead despite not playing on Saturday.
Arsenal were blunt at both ends. Their back line looked unusually passive for Brighton’s first two goals, while the attack failed to turn its clearest openings into a route back into the contest.
- Captain Martin Ødegaard frequently dropped away from the forward areas and showed visible frustration during a difficult afternoon.
- The Norway international was denied by goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen in a one-on-one shortly before the interval.
- Bukayo Saka missed another opportunity soon afterwards.
- Kai Havertz also failed to beat Verbruggen in the 78th minute.
Brighton’s energy and aggression made the difference, leaving Arsenal to absorb a first setback after an unbeaten opening run and City to enjoy an unexpected advantage at the summit.
