Old Trafford watched an early Manchester United advantage dissolve on Wednesday as Brighton completed a 3-2 comeback to knock Michael Carrick’s side out of the Carabao Cup in the round of 32.

For a few minutes, the Manchester evening appeared to offer relief for a United team struggling to find its footing at the start of the campaign. Shea Lacey struck in the eighth minute and Mason Mount followed two minutes later, putting the home side 2-0 ahead against a Brighton team enjoying a far stronger league opening.
But Brighton, fifth in the Premier League, recovered before the interval and then took control after the break. United, who finished third in last season’s Premier League, have only four points from their opening four league fixtures this term and sit 13th in the table.

- Pascal Gross levelled the tie in the 65th minute.
- Maxim de Cuyper scored Brighton’s winner four minutes later, in the 69th minute.
Kostoulas’ goal changed the atmosphere before the teams returned for the second half. Brighton carried that momentum into the closing stages, with Gross restoring parity before De Cuyper completed the turnaround.
The result marked United’s first defeat in any competition after leading 2-0 at home for 50 years, a damaging night for Carrick and his side during an already difficult opening stretch of the season.
Villa and Everton move into the last 16
Elsewhere in the competition, Aston Villa progressed to the round of 16 after a 3-1 victory away to Coventry. Unai Emery’s team avoided the upset and continued their cup run.
Everton also secured their place in the next round, beating Wolves 1-0. Wolves are currently playing in the Championship, England’s second tier.
