The sequence has sharpened the criticism around Alonso, whose move from Real Madrid was intended to bring calm authority to Stamford Bridge. Instead, Chelsea are searching for the solidity that has traditionally been expected of a side with their ambitions, and one former captain has voiced his concern in particularly direct terms.
Terry questions Chelsea’s defensive responsibility
John Terry, the former Chelsea defender and captain, described the situation as unacceptable and said the side must improve quickly. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said it was a difficult period for the club and acknowledged that the team were struggling.
Terry’s central objection was to Chelsea’s approach at set pieces and crosses. He said he prefers man-to-man marking and remains unconvinced by zonal systems or a high defensive line. In his view, Brentford identified a vulnerability after the interval, finding space at the far post once deliveries travelled beyond the players guarding the near-post area.
“When the ball goes over those at the first post, nobody seems certain who they are responsible for,” Terry said in essence. He accepted that zonal marking is common across the modern game, but argued that it can leave individuals without enough accountability. For Chelsea, currently conceding more freely than any other Premier League team, that argument will carry weight far beyond one difficult afternoon.
