Elena Rybakina’s title defence has barely required a warm-up, but the BNB Ningbo Open quarterfinals now present the World No. 1 with a qualifier enjoying the biggest week of her career. Rybakina, Iva Jovic and Diana Shnaider lead a top half packed with ranked players, while the lower section has opened into an all-unseeded race.
The second-to-last WTA 500 event of the season has reached its final eight. Four quarterfinals are set, with Rybakina chasing another Ningbo crown and qualifier Katarzyna Kawa arriving as the surprise name in the draw.
Quick facts
- Top seed and defending champion Elena Rybakina meets qualifier Katarzyna Kawa.
- Iva Jovic and Diana Shnaider renew a rivalry that Jovic leads 1-0.
- Leylah Fernandez faces Ekaterina Alexandrova after defeating her in Wuhan last week.
- Czech Billie Jean King Cup teammates Sara Bejlek and Marie Bouzkova meet for the first time.
Rybakina has spent only 30 minutes on court in Ningbo. Polina Kudermetova retired with a right-shoulder problem while trailing 5-0 in the opening set, sending the tournament’s No. 1 seed through without completing a full set.
Her next opponent, Kawa, is ranked No. 128 and has already won four matches this week. The 33-year-old came through qualifying after Katie Volynets and Daria Snigur both withdrew during their second sets, then fought back from a set down against lucky loser Snigur in the main draw, winning 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Kawa followed that with the standout result of her singles career, a 7-5, 6-2 defeat of 14th seed Belinda Bencic. It was her first win over a Top 20 opponent, 16 years after making her WTA Tour debut in 2010.
After beating Bencic, Kawa said she was approaching the Rybakina match without pressure, calling the win the finest of her career and saying she was thrilled by the opportunity ahead.
Shnaider has not lost a set in Ningbo, although the No. 13-ranked player has repeatedly had to rescue difficult positions. She saved five set points in a 7-5, 7-6 (4) victory over Yulia Putintseva, then needed seven match points to subdue Alexandra Eala 7-5, 6-4.
The Russian has a strong tournament record in Ningbo, having reached the final on her 2023 debut and the semifinals last season. Her 9-3 mark at the event now takes her into a meeting with Jovic.
Jovic advanced by beating Jasmine Paolini 6-4, 6-3 and has reached seven quarterfinals this season. She has converted five of her previous six last-eight appearances into semifinal places.
The pair have met once before, in Dubai earlier this year, when Jovic recovered from a second-set lapse to beat Shnaider 6-4, 1-6, 6-0.
The bottom half contains no seeds, but every remaining player has already won a WTA title. Fernandez arrives after absorbing the heaviest workload among the quarterfinalists, spending almost six hours on court across two rounds.
The Canadian came from behind to upset seventh seed Elise Mertens, taking the deciding set 7-5, before needing more than three hours to eliminate qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Alexandrova’s route has been considerably shorter: she defeated Guo Hanyu before Marta Kostyuk retired after the first set of their round-of-16 match.
Alexandrova was a Ningbo finalist a year ago and has won five of her past six matches at the event. Fernandez, however, holds recent momentum in their head-to-head series after a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win in Wuhan last week, her first victory over the Russian since 2022.
Fernandez struck eight aces and 25 winners in Wuhan while committing 20 unforced errors. Alexandrova produced 47 unforced errors and nine double faults, while Fernandez created 19 break opportunities and converted five. Their last three contests have all required deciding sets.
The remaining quarterfinal brings together Bejlek and Bouzkova, Czech teammates in the Billie Jean King Cup. Bejlek is making her first Ningbo appearance and recovered from a set down to beat Alycia Parks 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round.
The 20-year-old then removed eighth seed Sorana Cirstea, saving two set points at 6-5 in the first set before taking the tiebreak and closing out a 6-4 second set. The result put Bejlek into her sixth quarterfinal of 2026 and marked her fifth Top 20 win of the season.
Bouzkova has already collected two WTA 250 trophies this year, winning in Bogota and Nottingham on different surfaces. She opened in Ningbo by defeating Kamilla Rakhimova and had been due to face second seed Iga Swiatek before Swiatek withdrew.
Instead, Bouzkova met lucky loser Anastasia Zakharova and turned around a 5-2 deficit in the first set. She saved four set points before completing a 7-5, 6-2 victory, setting up her first tour-level match against Bejlek.
