In London, Chelsea Women have set out a new maternity-support programme designed to keep players and their families properly supported before pregnancy, throughout it and after a return to football.
The club’s package addresses one of the central practical challenges for mothers in the professional game: balancing the demands of elite competition with pregnancy, recovery and childcare. It is intended to provide individual care across the full process while raising the standard of support available to women’s players.
Support before and after birth
Players will be offered tailored assistance during pregnancy, including medical examinations and private birth options. Once a player has given birth, Chelsea’s specialist staff will oversee support for post-partum recovery, covering physical conditioning as well as mental and emotional wellbeing.
Childcare arrangements are also part of the plan. The club will contribute towards nursery costs when a player resumes rehabilitation or training, helping bridge the period between maternity leave and competitive readiness.
Help for families on the road
For away fixtures, Chelsea will provide financial support for a partner or nanny to travel with the player and baby. That provision can continue for up to a year after the footballer returns to the pitch, aiming to ensure that the early months after childbirth do not leave players without family support while travelling.
The programme also includes strengthened adoption and parental-leave policies, acknowledging that players and staff may become parents through different routes.
- Personalised pregnancy support, including examinations and private delivery choices.
- Post-natal recovery care led by club specialists for physical, mental and emotional health.
- Funding for a partner or nanny to accompany a player on away trips for up to 12 months after her return.
- Updated adoption and parental-leave arrangements.
- Nursery-cost assistance during a player’s rehabilitation and training return.
