In Wolfsburg, Christian Eriksen’s spell with the club has come to an early close, with the Danish midfielder agreeing on Wednesday to end his contract as he continues his recovery in Denmark.

Eriksen, 34, has not played since collapsing during Denmark’s June friendly against Ukraine in Odense. The incident, in which he put a hand to his chest before going down, was the second such medical emergency of his career.
Wolfsburg and the player reached a mutual agreement to terminate a deal that had originally been due to run until June 2027. Sporting director Dieter Hecking said the club wanted Eriksen to have the freedom to determine his own next steps.
In his farewell message, Eriksen said that being close to his family in Denmark was his priority. He thanked Wolfsburg for the time he spent there and said he would look back fondly on the period with the German side.
The midfielder joined Wolfsburg as a free agent before the 2025-26 campaign, having previously represented Tottenham Hotspur, Inter, Brentford and Manchester United. His season in northern Germany ended with Wolfsburg relegated to the second division.
The June collapse in Odense
Eriksen began rehabilitation in Denmark after the June 7 match against Ukraine. At the time, he said he was well and confirmed that the implanted defibrillator fitted after his previous cardiac arrest had worked as intended.
That earlier emergency came during Denmark’s Euro 2020 match against Finland on June 12, 2021, in a tournament delayed by the pandemic. Denmark’s players formed a protective circle around Eriksen while he received treatment on the pitch.
Following his recovery, Eriksen had a defibrillator implanted and was able to resume his professional career. Almost four months after the latest collapse, his departure from Wolfsburg leaves his immediate football future open while he remains close to home.
