Bayern Munich have extended sporting director Christoph Freund’s contract until 30 June 2029, completing another senior management decision after CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and board member for sport Max Eberl also agreed new deals through 2029.

The 49-year-old Austrian had entered the final phase of his previous agreement. Bayern’s supervisory board had addressed the futures of Dreesen and Eberl at its meeting in late August, and Dreesen had indicated that Freund’s situation would be settled quickly.
Dreesen said Freund has become central to Bayern’s sporting decisions. He highlighted the director’s close working relationship with head coach Vincent Kompany, his proximity to the squad and his responsibility across the wider sporting department.
Bayern also credit Freund with strengthening the link between the first team and the club’s Campus academy. Dreesen said the expectations set when Freund arrived had been exceeded, both in the senior side and in talent development.
Eberl described Freund as an important contact across the professional squad, coaching staff and academy. He said their daily work complements one another and remains focused on moving the club forward.
Freund joined Bayern in summer 2023 after eight years as sporting director at RB Salzburg. His Bayern period has included the arrivals of Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz. He also helped bring Nathaniel Brown from Eintracht Frankfurt and Ismael Saibari from PSV Eindhoven to Munich last summer.
Freund said he was pleased to continue contributing to Bayern’s development. He called the role personally meaningful and said the club’s ambition remains to stay at the top.
His move to Munich had received family approval from the start. Freund recalled his mother’s verdict three years ago: Munich, she told him, was more attractive than London and suited the family well.
