Alexis Claude-Maurice helped Augsburg build what looked like a commanding position in Bremen, only for the night to turn sharply against the Bavarian side. The French midfielder provided an assist after the break as Augsburg went two goals ahead, but Werder Bremen produced a late surge to win 3-2 and hand Augsburg their first defeat of the Bundesliga campaign.
The move
Augsburg had been second best for long stretches at the Weserstadion, yet had established a two-goal lead by the hour mark. Claude-Maurice played his part in that unexpected advantage with a second-half assist.
Werder’s response was relentless. Marco Grüll began the comeback in the 66th minute, before Niclas Füllkrug levelled the score in the 87th. Mitchell Weiser then struck in the third minute of stoppage time to complete the turnaround with an impressive finish.
The result ended Augsburg’s unbeaten start and underlined the fine margins facing a side that had initially found ways to resist Bremen’s control of the match.
The French season around it
Friday’s opening fixture of Bundesliga matchday four had seen Bayern Munich overwhelm Union Berlin 7-0. Freiburg remain level with Bayern on points after drawing 2-2 at Eintracht Frankfurt, where French defender Lilian Brassier was involved for the home team.
Julian Schuster’s Freiburg created a significant number of opportunities in Frankfurt but could not turn their chances into a winning goal. Dortmund were still due to travel to Stuttgart on Sunday.

Cologne reduced the deficit through Ragnar Ache in the 90th minute, but Hamburg held on.
Mönchengladbach’s difficult start continued six days after changing coach. Interim boss Jan-Moritz Lichte saw his side open the scoring and fight until the final whistle against Mainz, with Shuto Machino converting a penalty in the fifth minute of added time, but the result still left Gladbach without a point and at the foot of the table.
